Cowes youngsters were drawn away to Moordown & Southbourne for this second round Hampshire Sunday U18 Cup tie which was played at Kings Park close to AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium. Prior to kick off two minutes silence was observed by both sides on Remembrance Sunday.
With nothing known about the opposition, Cowes were looking for a fast start to the game and certainly got what they wanted as a second minute Jamie Trowbridge corner from the left was only cleared to KYLE KILROY who fired into the left corner of the net from eight yards to give the visitors the early lead. The lead was nearly doubled on 12 minutes when another Jamie Trowbridge corner picked out Cory Sanderson but his header cannoned off the top of the home crossbar to safety. The home side finally created a chance but their forward blazed well wide on 22 minutes. Throughout the early stages the Match Referee had been giving all decisions to the home side and on the half hour booked Lorry Stanton for a nothing tackle which was extremely harsh. Minutes later skipper Cory Sanderson was clearly elbowed in the back of the head but the home player was not even spoken to by the Referee who was not having a good game. Cowes continued to dominate the game and again went close in the 34th minute when Jamie Trowbridge crossed and skipper Cory Sanderson glanced his header wide of goal. Four minutes before half time Cowes finally got the second goal they deserved when JAMIE TROWBRIDGE cut in from the right and sent his left foot shot past the home keeper. Right on half time Rowenn Churchill won the ball before giving to Cory Sanderson who turned and saw his low shot pushed away by the home keeper low to his right. H-t 0 – 2
Harry Symes and Fred Salter were brought on at half time in place of Daniel Drudge and Mark Robertson. Cowes did not take long to put the game to bed as in the 48th minute Lorry Stanton drove down the right, pulled the ball back to CORY SANDERSON who side footed home for 3 – 0. Four minutes later and game was over when Jamie Trowbridge ran down the left, pulled the ball back to CORY SANDERSON who curled the ball into the net off the keepers left hand post. The home side should of had a consolation goal on 65 minutes when their number 14 somehow sent the ball over the crossbar from about three yards out. Continuing his shocking game the Referee then sin binned Cory Sanderson just because he asked him “Is that not a foul then?” which as skipper, he is allowed to do. He even told the Cowes skipper he was off for eight minutes?? Cowes comfortably saw out the rest of the game though Jamie Trowbridge did see a free kick pushed away by the home keeper.
Following the final whistle the Referee was spoken to about the sin binning and his reply was words to the effect ‘that the offender will be fined for the sin binning’, thus showing he does not know how the system works as no fine is issued if sent to the ‘sin bin’.
A big thank you to Moordown & Southbourne who after the game supplied the Cowes team with sandwiches, fruit and hot drinks which was much appreciated by all.
